Go fragrance free
When it comes to home cleaning products, fragrance equals chemicals, which can potentially irritate allergy and asthma sufferers. So, where possible, opt for fragrance-free or eco-friendly products to clean your home.
New ways of cleaning
Consider using vapor steam cleaners and vacuums with a HEPA filter. Vapor steam cleaners disinfect and remove bacteria much better than traditional cleaning methods. Vacuums with a HEPA filter can remove up to 99.7% of allergens in a given space, especially if there are carpets or rugs in the space, which can trap lurking allergens. These are the two most effective cleaning devices to improve indoor air quality.
Keep your air ducts clean
Throughout the year, airborne allergens are drawn into your HVAC system and settle in the air ducts. Then, when the system is turned on, those allergens and contaminants are pushed into your living space and breathed in by you and your family. Professional air-duct cleaning is one way to greatly improve the quality of your indoor air. Contact your Lennox Dealer to clean your air ducts approximately every five years.
Change your HVAC filter
To improve the quality of your indoor air year round, it’s important to be conscious of the last time you changed your HVAC filter. Remember to check filters regularly and change them as needed. One-inch pleated filters should be replaced once a month. If you are unsure of the type of filter to use, your Lennox Dealer can recommend one for you based on the system you have. For all other filter sizes, your Lennox Dealer will check them and clean or replace as needed at the annual maintenance visit. Filters may need more frequent attention if the furnace is in constant use, is subject to dusty conditions, or you have pets in the house. Contact your Lennox Dealer to find out what filter is best for your system.
Houseplants can help
Did you know that bringing plants into your home is a natural way of removing toxins from the air? According to NASA’s Clean Air Study on this matter, you can achieve noticeable air purification by placing greenery every 100 square feet within any given space. For allergy sufferers, make sure the plants you bring into the house are allergy friendly.
Use a humidifier or dehumidifier
In southern, more humid climates, mold and mildew growth can be a problem. The best way to reduce the presence of mold and mildew in your home is to install a good dehumidification system. A Humiditrol® whole-home dehumidification system from Lennox works with your HVAC system to reduce humidity levels and to create a healthier and more comfortable home environment.
For northern and more dry climates, a Healthy Climate® whole-home humidifier is ideal, as it helps to keep your home properly humidified and stops the air from feeling dry and uncomfortable.
Dry air or moist air is poor air. A whole-home dehumidification or humidification system that works with your HVAC system is advantageous in achieving healthy, breathable and comfortable air throughout your home.
